Sodabi God - Libation

Straight from benin

Under colonial rule, local distillation was banned to protect imported alcohol. Sodabi kept flowing anyway, distilled in secret, shared among people who refused to let it disappear.

Neg Mawon - Solitude

The ones who refused it all

This collection carries two names. Mawon, for all who ran. Solitude, for the Guadeloupean heroine who took up arms in 1802 against the return of slavery, and paid for it with her life.

The sankofa bird moves forward and turns its head back. Not to return, but to carry something with it. Printed large on the back, on heavyweight two-ply cotton.
