Why The Return Begins With Heritage

On August 15th, We Are Blackness comes back. Not with something new, with something retrieved. The return begins with Heritage, because for us a comeback has never meant starting over. It means going back to get what was always ours.

We Are Blackness is a streetwear brand founded in Montreal. Each of our collections begins with a story rather than a season.

Sankofa: go back and get it

In the Akan language of Ghana, sankofa can be translated as "go back and get it."

It is pictured as a bird, and that is no accident. The bird is the only one that can make this gesture: the body thrown forward, the head turned all the way back, reaching for the egg resting on its own back. For us, to look behind means stopping. The bird keeps moving. The egg stands for the preciousness of the past: the knowledge, the wisdom, the heritage we carry back with us.

What was allowed to fade is not lost. We have the right to go back for it, and the duty to let it hatch.

This is our story. We Are Blackness was born to help keep the culture of African heritage alive. We paused to find ourselves, to walk our own path. We come back more grounded in our values. Nothing was lost: we return to the purpose of our early days, that each of our pieces must carry a message.

Heritage is not nostalgia

For us, heritage has never been a museum piece. It is not what we look at. It is what we wear, what we cook, what we say, what we sing. This year, this week, today. It only holds because we practice it.

Marcus Garvey built an entire movement on that conviction. Pride in origin is not decoration, it is foundation. A people sure of where they come from moves differently.

On August 15th, the pieces that started this brand return as a Heritage collection: Honor & Embrace and Emancipation. Back where the story restarts.

On August 25th, we come back with two limited-edition tees. Nothing more. Creating had been missing for us, and these two pieces are our way of marking this return, a gift to those who waited for us. Their design tells our own take on sankofa.
